A new study finds that men who take the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra can achieve firmer erections and lower their risk of death.
The study, published Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, is part of a larger, federally funded research programme to see whether men who take Viagra, the first of its kind, can enjoy better erections.
It's called "Viagra for Men," and it's the first oral treatment for erectile dysfunction to treat men with low sex drives and enlarged prostate glands.
Viagra is the only pill that treats erectile dysfunction and can help men with it, says the study's lead author, Dr David T. Sperdell.

But the study, which looked at nearly 10 million men, found that Viagra users who took it for about two years got the highest erections in the first year.
The drug's most common side effect is a decrease in blood flow to the penis. This effect is particularly important for men with heart problems.
Dr. T. Michael Pearson of Northwestern University said the study is "an important step forward in understanding the relationship between erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular disease."
Even though it's the first FDA-approved treatment for erectile dysfunction and prostate cancer, it's also one of the first clinical studies to show the drug can help men who take it to get their sex lives back.
The study, which was conducted by the University of Washington School of Medicine, was presented at the American Society of Interventional Radiology's annual meeting in New Orleans on Monday.
It's the only FDA-approved treatment for erectile dysfunction and is the only one approved to treat prostate cancer in men.
Although the Viagra study was funded by Pfizer Inc., a U. Food and Drug Administration sponsored study is being funded by GlaxoSmithKline plc.

In the study, the researchers asked participants to take Viagra once a day for three weeks. They then compared the results with those of placebo, a placebo that didn't contain the medication. They found that men who took Viagra for about two years got the highest erections, with an average of two and a half firmer erections for the placebo.
Viagra users also showed an increased risk of dying from heart disease, according to the study. It's the only FDA-approved treatment for erectile dysfunction and prostate cancer.
The results are based on data from more than 100,000 men.
